No, not the profession. When people ask “will AI replace WordPress developers”, the honest answer has two halves. AI apps already handle much of the everyday upkeep on a site. They do not handle the work that needs design judgement, deep system knowledge and a person who answers for the result.
We make PowerWP AI, a plugin that connects AI apps to WordPress, so we have a stake in this. We built it to run our own WooCommerce stores. Weigh our view with that in mind. We also say where AI falls short.
What AI apps can do on a site today
A chat window on its own cannot touch your site. It can only advise on what you paste into it. Once an app is connected to the site, through a plugin such as PowerWP AI, it reads the real state and can act.
The everyday list, the work people used to send to a developer or an agency, now looks like this:
- Diagnosis. Reading the error log, running the WordPress Site Health tests and timing slow pages.
- Common fixes. Finding the plugin behind a critical error and switching it off, with your OK.
- Update checks. Listing what is waiting, flagging the plugins that sit close to checkout, and updating one at a time with a check after each.
- SEO texts. Titles, meta descriptions and image alt text, saved after you approve the exact words.
- Bulk edits. Prices, stock and product texts, with a preview and a way to roll them back.
The features page shows these as real requests. A monthly maintenance retainer often covers just this list: look, check, update, fix the small thing. An app does the looking and the first pass on the real site, not on a description pasted into a chat.
Will AI replace WordPress developers? What still needs one
What remains is the part of the job that was never mechanical. This is our view, backed by how the tool behaves.
- Architecture. How a store, a membership site or a multilingual site is built, which plugin to trust and what needs custom code. An app can suggest. Someone has to live with the choice for years.
- Reviewing custom code. With file access, an AI app can edit theme and plugin code. PowerWP AI checks the PHP syntax first and reverts a change that causes a fatal error. That check does not see a broken layout or a checkout that stopped working. A developer reads the logic, the security and the speed.
- Big redesigns. A new theme or layout needs taste, a brand and a plan. Try it on a copy first. PowerWP AI does not create staging copies, so use your host’s staging tool or a local copy.
- Integrations. Payment providers, shipping and tax services live outside your site. A rollback restores your data. It cannot call back an e-mail, a webhook or a payment call.
- Judgement and accountability. AI apps misread requests and make mistakes, like people do. A log shows what happened. It does not take responsibility for it.
Security is another case. The scan in PowerWP AI is heuristic, so a clean result does not prove a site is clean. If you suspect a break-in, make a backup and call a security professional.
Where agencies and freelancers fit
Agencies and freelancers are the right choice for projects: a new build, a redesign, a migration, a custom feature, a launch with a deadline. They bring planning, taste and a person to call. Nothing above changes that.
What changes is the everyday list. Update checks, error-log reading, SEO texts and price changes can move in-house, to an owner with an AI app. The agency keeps the larger work.
Some owners will still prefer a retainer for the everyday list, and that is a fair choice. The difference is that the work can now be checked: every change sits in a log with the connection that made it.
How developers and agencies use AI apps themselves
Developers and agencies use AI apps on client sites too. The questions that matter are who can do what, and who did what. PowerWP AI answers both with connections.
- One connection per person and per site. Each has its own key or sign-in, permissions, expiry and log. Name it after the person and the computer, such as “Claude Code, Ana’s laptop”.
- Permission levels. Read-only diagnostics to take over a site, Content manager for editors, Developer for technical work without secrets or user accounts. Full access adds both, so give it for one task only.
- Logs. The Changes screen groups changes into work sessions by connection. The activity log lists every request and tool call: who, when, from which address, and the result. It keeps 60 days by default, and no tool can delete entries.
- Limits. A contractor’s connection can expire, be locked to their IP addresses and be revoked, and it then stops at once. Checkpoints belong to a connection, so rolling back one person’s work leaves a teammate’s alone.
A typical first request on a client site only reads. Example, on a demo site:
I just took over this site. Give me an overview: stack, plugins, problems and risks. Change nothing.
The team guide has the full setup, and the agencies page shows a sample session.
Each client site needs its own plan. Plans differ only in how many AI connections a site can have: Free 1 (read-only), Solo 1, Team 3 and Crew 10. They cost $0, $9, $23 and $59 a month per site.
What this means for you
So, will AI replace WordPress developers? For the everyday list, an AI app already does much of the looking and the first pass. For the rest, you still want a person.
- Site owners. Hand the everyday list to an AI app, starting read-only. Keep a developer or an agency for custom code, integrations and redesigns.
- Freelancers. Use an AI app for the first pass and spend your time on review, design and decisions. The log gives you something to show clients.
- Agencies. Keep the projects. Give clients a record of what was done, and treat each AI app as one more team member with its own connection and limits.
Keep the safety layers in mind: permissions, previews, recorded changes, an automatic health check and backups. An AI app that can look but not change is a low-risk way to see what it finds.
Questions
Will AI replace WordPress agencies?
Not for projects. A build, a redesign or a migration needs planning and people. The routine upkeep is the part that is moving towards the owner’s own AI app.
Is a developer still worth paying if I use an AI app?
Yes, for custom code, integrations, redesigns and anything that needs review. Use the app for the everyday list and a developer for the rest.
Can an AI app change my theme or plugin code?
Yes, if its connection has the Files permission, which the Developer preset includes. Each edit is recorded, PHP files are syntax-checked before they are written, and a change that crashes the site is reverted. A developer should still review it.
Can my developer use their own AI app on my site?
Yes. You create a connection for them with only the permissions the job needs, an expiry date and, if you like, an IP allow-list. They paste their own setup message into their own app. Revoke it when the job ends.
Try it on your own site. The Free plan is read-only: your AI app can look at everything and change nothing, with no card and no end date. When you want it to take on the everyday list, upgrade with the same key.
