Yes, Claude can edit WordPress sites once you connect it to yours. It can change pages, posts, products, settings, plugins, files and Elementor pages, but only what the permissions you give it allow. Start read-only, give each app its own permission level, set a checkpoint before big jobs and review what it did.
How Claude edits a WordPress site
Claude edits a site by calling tools that the site offers over MCP, the open standard that lets AI apps use outside tools. WordPress doesn’t offer those tools by itself, so a plugin such as PowerWP AI adds them.
On claude.ai, in the Claude app and on your phone, you connect by signing in. You add your site as a custom connector, sign in to WordPress and choose a permission level. Claude Code connects with a key instead. The How it works page shows the whole path.
What Claude can edit
With PowerWP AI, each kind of edit needs its own permission on the connection. Reading is always allowed. Everything else you grant one permission at a time, or with a preset.
- Pages, posts, products and orders (Content & store data). Claude can create, edit and delete them, plus media and categories.
- Elementor pages (Content & store data). Claude reads the page like the editor’s Navigator and changes texts, links and images element by element, with a dry run first. Edit Elementor pages has the steps.
- Settings (Settings & maintenance). Options, caches, scheduled jobs and maintenance mode.
- Plugins and themes (Plugins & themes). Install, activate, update and delete.
- Files (Files). Theme and plugin code. Treat this like developer access.
- The database (Database writes). Write queries and search and replace.
What Claude reads from your site reaches Anthropic under its terms, even when it changes nothing.
What Claude should not do unsupervised
Claude can make a mistake, like any editor. Some jobs deserve your eyes before anything is saved. Ask for the plan and wait for your yes before these:
- Bulk changes. Prices, stock or texts across many items. Ask for a table of old and new values first.
- Anything that sends e-mail. Changing an order’s status can make WooCommerce e-mail the customer, and rolling the status back doesn’t unsend it.
- Payment, tax and shipping settings. Change these yourself, or watch each step.
- Users and secrets. Keep the Users and Secrets permissions off. Grant them for one task only, then take them away.
- Updates, search and replace, and restores. Take a backup first.
- Your most important pages. Tell Claude which ones it must not edit without asking, such as the home page, header, footer and checkout.
Can Claude edit WordPress sites safely? Five steps
- Start read-only. Give your new connection the Read-only diagnostics preset. Claude can look at everything and change nothing. The Free plan works this way, so editing needs a paid plan.
- Give each app its own permission level. Choose Read-only diagnostics, Content manager, Developer or Full access. A writer’s app needs Content manager, not Developer. Full access is never preselected. Permissions and presets explains each level.
- Ask for a plan and a preview. Say: “Show me the exact new texts next to the current ones, and wait for my OK.” Most editing tools can also run as a dry run, which shows the result without saving.
- Set a checkpoint before big jobs. A checkpoint marks a point in the change log. Everything that connection changes afterwards can be rolled back in one step. Changes made by another connection, or by you in wp-admin, are not part of it. See Checkpoints and work sessions.
- Review and roll back. Open PowerWP AI › Changes to see each change and what a rollback would restore. Snapshots are kept for 30 days by default. If something was edited again since, the rollback stops instead of overwriting that work. Change log and undo has the details.
PowerWP AI adds one more guard. After a plugin, theme or code-file change, it loads your site again and reverts the change if the site now shows a fatal error.
Example: a price change on the demo store
Example, on a demo kitchenware store (your-store.com). You connect Claude with the Content manager preset and type:
Before you start, create a checkpoint called “before tea towel sale”. Then lower the price of all tea towels by 10 percent. Show me the exact old and new prices first.
Claude sets the checkpoint, reads the products and answers with a list, for example Tea Towel Set from $18.00 to $16.20. Nothing is saved yet. You read it and say yes.
Claude then makes the change and reports the change ids. If you change your mind, ask it to roll back to the checkpoint, as a dry run first. Or open PowerWP AI › Changes, choose Checkpoints and select Roll back to here.
What can’t be rolled back
Changes are recorded, so you can roll them back, but a few actions leave nothing to restore. A rollback can’t call back an e-mail that already went out, and the change log marks cache flushes, restores and runs of other plugins’ features as Irreversible. What can’t be undone has the full list. Before a big job, take a backup.
Questions
Can Claude edit my site on the Free plan?
No. The Free plan is read-only: Claude can look at your site and report, but not change anything. To let it edit, upgrade with the same key. Paid plans start at $9 a month per site.
Can Claude break my WordPress site?
It can make a mistake, so keep the permissions small and ask for a preview. Changes are recorded, so you can roll them back. Risky ones, such as plugin updates, are checked and reverted if they cause a fatal error.
Can Claude edit Elementor pages?
Yes, where Elementor is active. Claude can read a page’s structure and change texts, links and images by element, with a dry run and a one-step undo.
Can Claude edit a WooCommerce store?
Yes, with the Content & store data permission. It can change products, prices and stock. A bulk request of up to 100 items rolls back in one step. Larger ones are marked Irreversible.
Try it on your own site. The Free plan is read-only: Claude can look at everything and change nothing, with no card and no end date. When you want it to fix things, upgrade with the same key.
