Most people use ChatGPT with WordPress by copying and pasting: ask for a text or a fix, then paste it into the site yourself. Since ChatGPT supports MCP, the open standard for connecting AI apps to tools, it can work on the site directly instead: read the error log, check your plugins, edit a page or look up an order. This guide shows how to connect ChatGPT to a self-hosted WordPress or WooCommerce site, what you need first, and how to start safely.
What you need first
- A ChatGPT plan that lets you add custom MCP servers. OpenAI has changed which plans include this more than once. Open ChatGPT’s Plugins page: if you can click + and choose Add custom MCP server, your plan allows it.
- An MCP server on your site that supports sign-in. ChatGPT’s form offers OAuth sign-in or no authentication at all, so your site needs an MCP server with a proper sign-in. PowerWP AI provides one.
- A public site on HTTPS, with permalinks set to anything other than Plain under Settings › Permalinks.
Connect ChatGPT by signing in
With PowerWP AI 1.6.2 or newer installed:
- In WordPress, open PowerWP AI › Connections › Create connection › ChatGPT and copy your site’s address. It looks like
https://your-store.com/wp-json/wpai/v1/mcp. - Open chatgpt.com/plugins, click + and choose Add custom MCP server.
- Give it a name, paste the address as the server URL, choose OAuth as the authentication, confirm the warning and click Create as a plugin.
- ChatGPT opens your site’s sign-in. Sign in to WordPress as an administrator, choose what ChatGPT may do (start with Read-only diagnostics) and click Allow.
- Choose your site in a chat and ask your first question.
The connection appears under PowerWP AI › Connections with a Signed in badge. You can change its permissions there, and Revoke ends the sign-in at once. The ChatGPT setup guide covers the details and common problems.
Codex: the route with a key
Codex is OpenAI’s agent for longer jobs. It runs in the ChatGPT desktop app, as a command-line tool and as an IDE extension, and all three read one settings file. Codex connects with a key instead of a sign-in, so it also works with a site on your own computer.
In WordPress, create a connection for Codex, then copy the message under Let Codex connect itself and paste it into a Codex chat. Codex adds your site and tells you the next step. The Codex guide shows how to add it to the settings file by hand.
What about the official MCP Adapter?
The MCP Adapter, WordPress’s official plugin for offering abilities to AI apps, signs apps in with application passwords by default. ChatGPT’s form for custom servers doesn’t take an application password, so connecting the two takes developer work. If you are a developer, the MCP Adapter explained describes what it needs.
First things to ask
Begin with questions that change nothing:
- “Give me an overview of my site.”
- “Which plugins need updates, and is any of them risky?”
- “Check my home page and tell me what looks broken or slow.”
- For a store: “How many orders came in this week, and are any stuck?”
Example, on a demo kitchenware store. You ask ChatGPT why the site felt slow yesterday. It reads the error log and the Site Health report, finds a plugin writing the same warning thousands of times an hour, and suggests a fix. Nothing changes until you say so.
Stay in control
- Start read-only. The Free plan of PowerWP AI allows only that, with no end date.
- Know where data goes. What ChatGPT reads from your site goes to OpenAI under its terms.
- Keep a way back. Changes ChatGPT makes are recorded under PowerWP AI › Changes, so you can roll them back, and one switch turns all AI access off.
- A way in when the site is down. If a plugin crashes WordPress, rescue mode still lets ChatGPT in to find and switch off the cause. It works for apps that signed in, such as ChatGPT, and for apps that connect with a key.
Questions
Does ChatGPT need a paid plan to connect to WordPress?
It needs a plan that lets you add custom MCP servers. OpenAI decides which plans those are and has changed it before, so look for Add custom MCP server on ChatGPT’s Plugins page. If your plan doesn’t have it, use Codex with a key, or connect another app such as Claude.
Does it work in the ChatGPT apps?
Yes. You add your site once on chatgpt.com, and ChatGPT can then use it on the web and in its apps.
Can ChatGPT connect to a site on my own computer?
Not by signing in, because ChatGPT connects from the internet. Codex with a key can, because it runs on your computer.
Can ChatGPT break my site?
It can only do what its connection allows. Start read-only. When you allow changes, PowerWP AI records them so you can roll them back, and it checks risky changes such as plugin updates, reverting them if the site breaks.
