Activate your license

Paste your key under PowerWP AI › License to tie your plan to this site. Free keys work the same way, and local development sites need a key too.

Your license key activates your plan on one site. Paste it once and the site can add AI connections, receive updates and show your plan's limits. Your key is in My account › Licenses on powerwp.ai, and the Free plan has one too. Developing locally? A site on a local address needs a key too, and a paid plan covers one local copy without using up its site.

Activate your key#

  1. Open PowerWP AI › License.
  2. Paste your key into the License key field. It looks like PWAI-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Capital letters and spaces do not matter.
  3. Select Activate.

The screen then shows your plan, for example "Team plan, active". If the key is not accepted, the screen says why. See Troubleshooting.

What the screen shows#

After activation the License key card shows the key in shortened form, a status badge and when it was last checked. The What your license includes card shows:

  • Plan — the plan name. On the Free plan it says the plan is read-only.
  • AI connections — how many are in use and how many the plan allows, with a Manage link to Connections.
  • Sites — how many sites use this key, out of how many it allows.
  • Updates and support until — the end of the month you've paid for, or No end date on the Free plan.

Most sites only ever see Active.

StatusWhat it means
ActiveThe key works on this site.
Not activatedNo key is stored. Every AI connection on the site can only read, and a public site cannot add new ones.
ExpiredThe paid plan has ended and the site is back on the Free plan: your AI app can read the site but can't change anything. Subscribe again to get changes back.
SuspendedAI apps can read but not change anything, and no new AI connection can be added. Contact support.
Revoked, Not validThe key is not valid any more. Enter a valid key. Until then every AI connection on the site can only read.
Not active on this siteThe key's seat on this site was freed, for example to use it on another site. Activate it again.

Buttons on the License screen#

  • Check now asks the license service again. Monthly payments, upgrades, cancellations and suspensions otherwise reach your site with the daily update check, within a day.
  • Use another key replaces the key. The old key's seat is given back.
  • Deactivate on this site removes the key and frees the seat, so you can use the key on another site. Existing AI connections are not revoked, but without a key they can only read, and new ones cannot be added until a key is active again.

Connections per plan#

Your plan decides how many AI connections the site can have. A connection is the access you give one AI app, with its own key or sign-in, permissions, expiry and log.

PlanAI connectionsChanges allowed
Free1No, read-only
Solo1Yes
Team3Yes
Crew10Yes

Only active connections count. A revoked or expired connection frees its place. Management keys are not counted. A site that is already over the limit never loses a connection: the oldest ones can still make changes, the newer ones can only read (marked “Can only read”), and this screen shows "More AI connections than your plan includes" until you revoke one or upgrade.

At the limit, creating a connection shows a message such as "Your Solo plan includes 1 AI connection, and 1 are in use. Revoke one you no longer need, or upgrade your plan."

The Free plan is read-only#

The Free plan is read-only on purpose: you see what your AI app finds on your real site before it can change anything. With a Free key every connection of the site can read: diagnostics, logs, content, orders and settings. None can change anything, and a new connection can only be Read-only diagnostics. The other presets show a Paid plan badge, and the header shows Free · read-only.

To let your AI app make changes, upgrade in My account › Licenses. The key stays the same and your site picks up the change at the next daily check, or at once with Check now.

When a license ends#

A paid plan ends when you cancel, or when a payment fails and isn't retried successfully. Three days after the plan’s end date the site goes back to the Free plan, so a renewal paid a little late changes nothing. Your AI app can still read the site, but it can't change anything until you subscribe again. The license key stays the same and nothing needs reinstalling. A Free key has no end date.

Local development addresses#

Since plugin 1.6.3 a site on a local address needs a license key like any other site. These addresses count as local:

  • localhost, 127.0.0.1 and ::1
  • names ending in .localhost, .test, .local, .example or .invalid

A paid plan covers one local copy of your site without using up its site, so you can try changes locally with the same key; a second local copy counts as a site. The plan’s connection limit applies. With no key, or with a Free key, a local site is read-only like any other.

Note

Sign-in for Claude and ChatGPT needs a site those apps can reach over the internet, so it does not work on a local address. Connect Claude Code or another app on the same computer with a key instead.
