Add alt text to your images

Find images without alt text on your pages, review the proposed texts and save them in the Media Library in small batches.

Images without alt text are a gap for people who use screen readers and for search engines. Your AI app can list the images that miss it, propose a short text for each and save the texts after you approve them. It saves nothing until you say yes.

What you need#

  • Read-only diagnostics is enough to find the images and to draft texts in the chat.
  • Content & store data (the Content manager preset) to save alt text in the Media Library. On the Free plan your AI app can look and draft but cannot save; upgrade when you want it to save.

Before you start#

Your AI app can describe an image only from what it can see: its file name, title, caption and the page or product it belongs to, and the picture itself if the app can open images. Read every proposed text against the real picture before you approve it.

Good alt text says what the image shows in a short sentence, without "image of". An image that only decorates can have an empty alt text.

Steps#

  1. Find the gaps.
    • Example prompt

      Check https://your-store.com/shop/ and list the images without alt text. Don't change anything.

    • Your AI app will use page_check, and rest_request to read the Media Library.
  2. Propose texts in a table.
    • Example prompt

      For the first ten of them, propose alt text of up to 12 words. Show a table with the image, the page it is used on and the proposed text. Don't save anything.

  3. Approve and save a few.
    • Example prompt

      Set a checkpoint, then save the first five texts I approved and show me the result.

    • Your AI app will use checkpoint_create and rest_request to write each image's alt text.
  4. Continue in small batches, then check.
    • Example prompt

      Check the same page again and tell me which images still have no alt text.

    • Your AI app will use page_check.

  • page_check shows no images without alt text on the pages you fixed.
  • PowerWP AI › Changes lists each saved alt text as a change.

How to undo#

Alt text saved with rest_request is a single-item write, so it is recorded and can be rolled back, one image or everything after the checkpoint. See Change log and undo. When you add a new image through your AI app, it can set the alt text on import (media_import).
